She’s cool. Make that cool cube. Heck, coolness has a new definition. It’s Alia Bhatt. They say being cool is being yourself. It’s not bothering about what people have to say about you. That in effect delineates Alia Bhatt. She was cool when people laughed at her for her lack of general knowledge. She laughed at herself. That she’s laughing her way to the bank, is another story. Right now, everything she touches is turning to gold. And she’s cool with that too. Her candour is endearing. She talks about wanting to be an actress since her childhood. And yet confesses that she hates having to look good every day. She has no qualms about sharing her most embarrassing moments, neither about the fact that she can burp very unladylike. She’s unapologetic about her kissing scenes or that she has kissed and regretted it. Told ya she’s kinda cool gal.
Did you always want to be an actress?
Yeah... But sometimes I wonder why I wanted to be an actress. I remembering sitting in my room watching Karisma Kapoor and Govinda dancing in some garden, I was bobbing my head and I said yeah this is fun. I remember every Sunday I’d would perform for my nana and nani.. I would do some dance number and they’d clap. I’d perform at birthday parties, at Christmas parties. Even as a kid, I wanted people to look at me. That I guess was a sign that I wanted to become an actor. So it all started with this craze to dance in front of people.
Are there times when you wish you weren’t an actress?
No. Sometimes though I don’t want to look good, I want to have a bad hair day. I’m sure girls will connect with me, when they feel she’s not always looking good, she has a day when she looks normal. I believe it’s important to connect with people.
What are the three things we don’t know about you?
1. I have a fear of the dark.
2. I hate flying.
3. Songs can make me cry.
There’s one more thing people don’t know about me. I burp loudly without shame, I don’t care who’s around, I just burp.
What’s your most embarrassing moment?
I once went for a school race without wearing my underwear. I just went wearing my shorts and I realised only after reaching school.
One actor you would love to get naughty with?
Hrithik Roshan. He is single now, na?
Were you heartbroken when Imtiaz Ali didn’t sign you for his next?
No no. If the role doesn’t suit me then why should he sign me? I was not fit for the role. He can’t do the film just because he is fond of me na? That’s a wrong reason.
One thing you miss doing as a normal girl.
Going to malls. I liked shopping at Palladium Mall. Now I can’t do that.
What do you do when you’re not shooting?
I chill with my friends. I do normal things like I go for a movie or then watch movies at home. If I have enough time I take a holiday.
Who do you confide your secrets in?
Abhishek Varman (director of 2 States).
What turns you on in a man?
A nice perfume, a good sense of humour. But a good looking man haan.
What turns you off in a man?
A MCP. Bad breath also is also a big put off. I can still deal with body odour but bad breath? No. He should have a sense of humour and I should be able to have a conversation with him. I hate people who only talk about themselves.
Do you have a type of guy you like?
I like the bad boy type. I hate nice people.
Have you ever kissed and regretted
Yeah. I am not going to tell you whom. I can’t tell you the instance. But yes I regret it very much.
One thing you want that Parineeti Chopra and Shraddha Kapoor have?
Parineeti has Aditya Chopra, YRF. Shraddha has Tum hi ho (Aashiqui 2) and Galliyan (Ek Villain).
Weirdest thing a fan has done?
It wouldn’t be weird but creative. This fan sent me a book on my birthday called The Chronicles Of Alia. He’d written down everything from the time I was born to the present day. It was done very creatively.

Candlelight dinner or long drive?
Burger at home. If I have to choose then probably a long drive. I hate candlelight dinners.
What would your advice be to young girls and boys?
I’m the wrong person to advice anyone. I’d like every girl to love herself more than anyone else. That’s the only way they’ll never land up hurting themselves. Boys need to be honest and straightforward. Sometimes girls get attached to guys much faster than guys get attached to them. So if guys see that happening, they should tell the girl to slow down. Girls are more sensitive that’s why I say love your self more. When you love someone you forget about yourself. You become a doormat and let everyone walk over you. You stop caring about yourself. That shouldn’t happen.
What if you like someone and things don’t work out?
I am a fighter. Also I’m stubborn. I’ll fight till I can. After a while I will just give up. But I also believe if you love someone set them free. If they come back, they’re yours. If they don’t they never were.
Do you believe actresses can be friends?
I genuinely believe they can. I’ve hung out with Shraddha and Parineeti and they’re cool. I don’t see why you have to have this ‘oh we have to be like this’, just because you’re competitors. I can be friends with anyone if I hang out with them.
You wanted to style Parineeti at one point.
She wanted me to style her; I didn’t want to style her. Who am I to style anyone? When we met, we spoke about losing weight. Huma Qureshi, Parineeti and me. We spoke about getting into shape and we were like, "Yeah! Come on we should do it." Parineeti was like ya people should see the transformation. That’s when this came up. We were so excited that we three would change our image.
Friendships in the industry don’t really work, na?
That’s not true. I have great friendship with the guys I’ve worked with. Whether it’s Sidharth Malhotra, Varun Dhawan, Arjun Kapoor or Randeep Hooda. Varun and Sidharth have a strong friendship. Ranveer Singh and Arjun are thick friends. They don’t have to talk everyday to have a strong friendship. They’re always looking out for each other. Whenever they meet it’s like two best friends meeting, there’s no animosity between them at all. It’s because they’re mature, they’re smart. Like while we were promoting 2 States, I also promoted Ek Villian and Main Tera Hero. It should be like that, it shouldn’t be a war.
Do you feel the younger lot is much more chilled out?
I am asked this question a lot. I don’t know the older lot. I don’t know the dynamics they shared. So I really don’t know whether we’re more chilled out than them.
Arjun says he likes kissing you… you think you’re a good kisser?
Ya I believe I am... no one’s complained. When there’s a complaint I’ll tell you. I’m bored of these Arjun questions. He was put in the spot, he had to answer the question. (Laughs) He couldn’t say he didn’t like kissing me, na.
